Many YouTube creators have reported a drop in their video views since mid-August 2025.

According to YouTube’s official Liaison account on X, these changes were not caused by YouTube itself but appear related to an update in ad-blocking filter lists, especially the EasyPrivacy list.

This change has affected how view counts are logged, leading to a drop in reported views for many channels.

YouTube View Drops: What Happened with Ad-Blockers and YouTube Views?

YouTube View Drops
  • The EasyPrivacy list, part of popular ad blockers like uBlock Origin Lite, added a rule blocking requests to youtube.com/api/stats/atr starting August 11, 2025.
  • This request is crucial because it helps YouTube register when a video view occurs.
  • Blocking this request means that even when viewers watch a video, the view may not be counted in YouTube’s analytics.
  • The filter update was merged into uBlock Origin Lite and distributed through the Chrome Web Store shortly afterward.
  • This issue mostly affects desktop users, who commonly use browser ad-block extensions, while mobile app views remained largely unaffected.

Several creators have noticed their views dropping but their revenue (RPM) staying steady, indicating that monetization remains stable despite the apparent view count drop.

Likes and engagement also continue normally since these are not affected by ad blockers.

Why This Matters to Creators and Brands

  • View counts are essential for creators to measure audience engagement and negotiate with sponsors.
  • Sudden drops in views can cause confusion and mistrust in analytics.
  • Marketers and creators should understand that third-party tools like ad blockers can impact data accuracy.
  • It is recommended to monitor desktop and mobile analytics separately and communicate these findings to clients or teams.
  • YouTube encourages awareness of these external factors when analyzing performance drops.
