How to Use Electronic Verification Code (EVC) Instead of ITR-V Sign for Income Tax Return e-filing

Affiliate disclosure: In full transparency – some of the links on our website are affiliate links, if you use them to make a purchase we will earn a commission at no additional cost for you (none whatsoever!).

If you are filing your income tax return, you have to verify it in the final step. If you don’t verify your return, it will not be considered valid as per laws. You get 120 days to verify your return, once you have uploaded your ITR on the e-filing website.

There are 2 types of verification of tax return –

  1. Electronic Verification Code
  2. ITR-V (Offline)

What is Electronic Verification Code (EVC)?

Electronic Verification Code (EVC) is a 10 digits alphanumeric code to verify your income tax return sent to your registered mobile number while verifying return online. EVC can be generated via various methods.

Important things to know about EVC-

  • EVC is a 10 digit alphanumeric code that verifies the identity of the person filing the income tax return.
  • You can use EVC to verify ITR 1 (Sahaj) / ITR 2 / ITR 2A / ITR 3 / ITR 4 /ITR 4S (Sugam).
  • EVC would be unique and can be used only with the PAN of the person furnishing the income tax return.
  • You can use one EVC to validate only one ITR whether it is an original or revised return.
  • The EVC remains valid for 72 hours but you can generate multiple times.

Let’s discuss different ways to do EVC to verify your ITR return.

How to Generate Electronic Verification Code (EVC)?

You can generate EVC in four ways. Before proceeding to generate EVC please ensure that the mobile number and email address registered with the CBDT (Tax department) is accessible by you.

#1.  Generate EVC through e-filing website

This is the simplest method because you just need to click a few buttons and you will get EVC on your mobile and registered email.

Step 1: Log in to your account on the income tax efiling portal.

Step 2: Click on the e-file tab and select Generate EVC as shown in the image below:

Generate-EVC-on-efiling-website

You would receive EVC on your registered mobile number and email address. Put the code in the box on the screen to complete the process of e-filing.

#2. Generate EVC through Aadhaar Card

Step 1: Log in to your account on the income tax efiling portal.

Step 2: Go to  ‘Profile Settings’ on the top bar and click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’ button.

You will see an image as shown below:

Step 3: Fill in the required details and click on ‘Link Now’ to complete the process.

You can select option ‘I would like to generate Aadhaar OTP to e-Verify my return’ at the time of e-verifying your tax return.

#3. Generate EVC through Bank ATM

To generate EVC via ATM

  1. Visit your bank’s ATM and swipe your ATM card.
  2. Click on the ‘Pin for Income Tax filing’. An EVC will be sent to your registered mobile number.

This EVC is valid for 72 hours. Log-in to your e-filing account on the income tax website.

Go to the ‘e-verify returns’ option. Select the ITR to verify it and select the option ‘Already generated EVC through bank ATM.’

Enter the EVC to verify your tax return.

#4. Generate EVC through Net Banking

To verify your ITR using Net banking facility-

  1. Log in to your bank account on the bank’s website.
  2. Select the e-verify option under the ‘Tax’ tab.
  3. You will be redirected to the e-filing website of the income tax department. Click on the ‘My Account’ tab and select the ‘Generate EVC’ option.

An EVC will be sent to your registered mobile number and email.

#5. Generate EVC through Demat Account

You can generate EVC for your ITR through Demat Account from the income tax efiling portal.

  1. Log in to the e-filing portal.
  2. Profile Settings adn click on Prevalidate your Demat Account.
  3. Select Depository Type.
  4. Enter Mobile and email address.
  5. Click on Prevalidate.

Click on the ‘My Account’ tab and select the ‘Generate EVC’ option. You will get multiple options here and select “Generate EVC through Demat Account Number”.

  1. Hi,

I followed all the steps and was able to download the acknowledgement. But i am not able to do e-verify. Though i entered correct evc which i received through email. The error says ‘Invalid EVC. Please valid evc genereated through net banking.’ Is it known problem? What do i have to do now?

    Thanks.

    • The system of Electronic Verification Code is very new and none of the errors or solutions are provided by CBDT. You should resolve the error by following the method of EVC through Net Banking.

Please keep us posted your progress.

  2. ITR 1 has been uploaded by logging into registered PAN account through IT web site and acknowledgement obtained. EVC was generated through IT web site itself but the same was not accepted with comment “invalid EVC”. Please confirm if the verification system by signing the paper ITR-V and sending to IT Department Bengaluru will simultaneously continue.

  3. Hi Sanyam,

Can you explain me how to generate EVC through net banking because I am not able to e-verify my returns from the generated EVC through efiling website.

    • You will have to simply login to your net banking account and seek the pay tax or somethine like income tax link which will redirect you to the incometaxefiling site.

For example: FOr Generating EVC through SBI bank, you need to click on e-tax tab and than select “login to efiling site as shown in figure”. You will be redirected to the income tax efiling website, where you can select the already uploaded tax return to verify.

  10. Dear Sir
I am not agree with your post, posted on 01/08/2015 9:40pm. One can use EVC generated through Aadhaar or netbanking even if he has refund. If mobile no. is not linked with Aadhaar or not accessible, then mob no can be linked with Aadhaar via post. Mob no will be linked within two weeks after sending the post.

After confirming the PAN no. it returned to the efiling portal and it showed an error stating ” you are not authorised to view this page because either your bank details, or your PAN or profile details are incorrect or these details have not been passed on to efiling. Please contact owner of the information for details. ”
What should i do ? I tried thro AAdhar no. But unfortunately i have lost the mobile registered with aadhar.
Then I generated EVC thro my current mobile connected to bank. i found that it can be used only if there is no refund. I have to get refund although my income is less than 5.00 lacs.

      • Hi, I got the same message too. “You are not authorised to view this page because either your bank details, or your PAN or profile details are incorrect or these details have not been passed on to efiling. Since I have a refund and don’t have an Aadhar card, what should I do?

        • If you have a refund please use old method of sending ITR-V to CPC bangalore because EVC can be used only if your gross total income less deduction is less than Rs.5 lakhs and no refund is claimed.

        • When you login from netbanking to income tax efiling website, If you are getting this error “you are not authorised to view this page because either your bank details or PAN……” then it is because you have not entered this bank account details in your efiling website login. So, firstly directly go to https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/ and Login. Then go to Profile settings -> pre validate your bank account. Here, enter your Bank account details (Account number, IFSC code etc, of the same bank account, from which netbanking you would like to login. After this, you should be able to login to netbanking. If you still have problem then in efiling login, just check the settings in Profile Settings -> efiling Vault Settings Higher Security and make sure login from netbanking is enabled.

          • Hey Sunil,

I modified the Higher Security settings to login from netbanking but now it is allowing me to login to incometaxindiaefiling web site ONLY through netbanking and that is failing for me. So I am stuck now, not able to login at all.
            Could you please help?

  22. Hi,

I have applicable refund, I used the e-Verify method to verify but I verified by Aadhar card no. On Income Tax site its showing successfully verified, will I get the refund amount? I am confused because in many answer above you mentioned that refund will come only when you e-verify with Bank Account.

If its correct that Aadhar method e-verify is not good, please suggest path forward.

    Thanks

  23. Hi,
I have accounts in 2 different banks – one salary a/c in ICICI and another savings a/c in IDBI bank. I have registered with IT dept. the IDBI savings bank account. Somehow my login credentials with IDBI are locked and wont be generated before 31st August which is last date for tax filing.
    I have two questions-
    1. Can I use the other salary account ICICI bank net banking login to e-verify my tax return ? OR does it have to be the IDBI bank that have registered with IT dept. ?
    2. Is e-verification’s last date same as e-filing date of 31st August ? Do I have an option to e-verify only before 31st August 2015 or can I do that later as well ?
Thanks and looking forward to get inputs.
    Aditi.

    • In my opinion EVC is just to cross verify the identity of the person with PAN card mentioned in the ITR. So you can use any bank account having your aadhar card and PAN linked to everify your tax return.

No, EVC is just like sending ITR-V to CPC Bangalore, thus the time limit is same for verify tax return through EVC i.e. 120 days from the date of filing of ITR.

    • 1. Time depends upon the mode of sending the letter, obviously it would reach early if sent by speed post.
      2. You will get to know when it would reach there through email/sms. You can also check status on the site. Under status head, it would show “?TR V received “.
      3. in general it would take 20- 25 days .
