It’s always a good practice to keep your documents, files and media stuff in different drives to avoid any chaotic mess. To do so, you may need to know how to partition your hard drive in Windows 7?
Partitioning always helps you to divide your big chunk of storage into smaller drives for better navigation.
So, in this article, we will walk you through the processes required for creating a separate data partition in Windows.
So, let’s get started with how to create a separate data partition for Windows?
How to Create a Separate Data Partition for Windows?
Sometimes, you may need to make some additional drives on your Windows system to keep different data separately. So, from now on in this article, we will tell you about the ways by which you can learn how to repartition a hard drive without formatting partition?
In this section, we will make you aware of the two methods by which you can create a separate data partition for windows. Actually, data partition can be done by two ways. One is by while formatting the drive and the other one requires no formatting.
So, let’s face off the very first method:
Method #1: Partitioning without formatting the drive.
Step #1: If you don’t want any data loss to occur then it is recommended that you should move your data (preferably to an external hard drive). This will save you from any mishappenings while in the process.
In this very first step, you need to get access to the disk management tool which comes inbuilt in the Windows operating system. If you are wondering how to do that, then don’t you worry, just read on.
If you are using Windows 8, then you need to navigate to the bottom left corner of the window and then select disk management from there. You can also use the “Win + X” command and then proceed from there.
If you are using Windows 7, then there is more than one way to do that. One is to go to the start button and type disk management or manage disks at the search field and hit enter.

One other way is to right-click on my computer icon and select “Manage” from the menu which follows. After that, all you require doing is to head to the left pane of the following window and click on the “Disk Management” option which is just below the storage section.

This way you can get access to the Disk management tool in windows.
Well, this step is an easy piece of cake. Some complex things are coming your way, brace yourself, folks. Kidding, we will be making things simpler for you. So, for further proceeding, kindly move on to the next steps.
Step #2: Now, in this step, you need to click on the drive from which you want to make the partition. A key thing to take a note that you must have enough free space so that you can create a partition out of it. To do so, all you need to do is to right-click on the selected drive and from the menu which follows; you need to select the “Shrink Volume” option.

This will take some time querying volume for available space.

Once you have the next window in front of you, then you are requested to move on to the next step in order to see what to do next?
Step #3: After executing the previous step, you would have a new window that will ask you to enter the amount of size you want to allocate to the new partition.
Remember that, the allocated space needed to be in MB (MegaBytes). So, in case if you want to allocate 50 GB to the new partition so, you need to enter 50000 MB. As simple as that.
You need to enter that amount in the appropriate field next to the “Enter the amount of space to shrink in MB” text.

Once you are done with it, then you can now hit the “Shrink” button. This will take some moments to process, and once it is done, you will have the desired amount of unallocated space in which you have shrunk from the existing partition.
Step #4: In this step, you require right-clicking on the unallocated space and then selecting the first option which is “new simple volume.” This will take you to a wizard on which you have to assign a special drive letter. For example, “C.” You are also provided with a couple of other options, but this is enough to get you going.
Once you are done through the mentioned, then all you need to do is to click on the Next button, and this will give you a new partition. This is how it can be done in this way.
Method 2: While installing windows.
This is by far the most preferable and best method. In this method, we make partitions while installing the windows itself. The process is quite easy.
All that you need to do is to follow your usual process of installing the windows. Once you have reached the point where you are asked to do the partitions, then you need to select a “new column” and then enter the disk size.
Now, follow the onscreen instructions to finish the process of installing the windows and you are done. We won’t be discussing this in detail as it involves showing you the process of installing the windows also.
So, this was all about How to Create a Separate Data Partition for Windows? Do we hope that this might have helped you in your quest of How to make partition in windows after installation?
