How to Make a Graph in Excel

In order to learn how to make a graph in excel, it is important for you to have basic knowledge regarding the cell and the row and columns. Until you know the rows and columns you won’t be able to fill up the data in the sheet.

So, let me give you a brief introduction of the rows and the columns first, once we are done with it, we will quickly move to learn the graph. Those who have basic knowledge of Excel can directly move to the tutorial part!

  • In Excel, “columns” are referred to as vertical depth. If you notice in the Excel program there are some letters in capital placed at the top of the sheet. These letters i.e., A, B, C, are called columns in the spreadsheet.
  • On the other hand “Rows” are placed in a horizontal manner. If you notice in the spreadsheet, there is a list of numbers i.e., 1,2,3 and so on…. appearing. These cells are known as Rows. Check out the below screenshot if you didn’t get me well.

So whatever you write in the verticle form that will be considered as columns and vice versa. And the boxes we write the data in are known as cells. If you already know about this, you can directly move to the guide i.e. how to make a graph on excel. 

Now simply follow the given steps and learn to create a graph and charts in Excel.

Step 1: To create a graph first, you will need to insert the data you want a graph of. For example, I am putting the data like months of the year i.e., January, February, March and so on…

On the other hand, I am putting some digits like any random numbers. See the screenshot. These numbers can be anything depends on the need of yours. I have just taken the random digits.

Fill up all the digits in the rows and columns and name the columns you to display in the graph. Once done, highlight the rows and columns you want to create a graph of.

Step 2: Done with the above step? Ok now after selecting the area(Row/Column) click on the insert menu from the menu bar.

As sooner you will click on the insert, you will see some of the options appearing just below the menu bar including the charts. And here you go!! Select the type of chart from the list appearing.

Step 3: As you can see in the below screenshot, I selected the column chart. After clicking on the column, A drop-down list has appeared. This is where you have to choose the graph type as per your suitability. Check out the screenshot below.

Step 4: That’s it!! After selecting the graph type, excel will prepare the graph immediately. And after you have created the graph, you can change the design and the color of the graph easily just by clicking on the design option.

Change Chart Type:

After creating the graph and learning how to make graphs in Excel, you might be wondering if there is an option to change the type of graph? Let me tell you; you can change the type of graph anytime you want. All you will need to do is click on the change chart type option.

The option you will find at the top left corner of the Excel sheet. If you find any difficulty in finding the option you can check the screenshot mentioned below.

As you can see in the screenshot, I have marked the change chart type option with the red rectangle and the rest with yellow. The list I have marked with the yellow are the types of charts. Select any of them as per your needs and suitability.
