OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has entered into a multiyear global partnership with News Corp, giving the AI company access to both current and archived news content from News Corp’s major publications.
This includes well-known outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, New York Post, The Times, and several Australian newspapers.
The deal allows OpenAI to use this content not only for training its AI models but also to answer user questions directly with accurate, high-quality news material.
The financial details of the deal have not been officially disclosed, but reports suggest it could be worth over $250 million across five years.
This agreement marks a shift in the AI industry, as OpenAI moves from using publicly scraped content to working directly with media companies to license journalism ethically.
News Corp’s CEO praised the partnership, calling it a new standard for combining truth and technology, while OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman described it as a proud moment for journalism and AI.
This deal follows similar agreements OpenAI has made with other media groups such as The Associated Press and Financial Times, and comes at a time when publishers are increasingly concerned about fair compensation and control over their content in the AI era.
