Dave Thomas was an American businessman who founded the popular fast-food restaurant chain Wendy’s. He was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on July 2, 1932, and was adopted as an infant by Rex and Auleva Thomas of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
As a teenager, Thomas began working in the restaurant industry, and after several years of working for various restaurants, he opened his own restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, in 1962, which he named “Wendy’s” after his daughter Melinda Lou, who was nicknamed Wendy.
Wendy’s grew to become one of the largest fast-food chains in the United States, known for its square-shaped burgers and “old-fashioned” customer service under Thomas’ leadership. Thomas was also featured in many of the company’s television commercials, and he became a popular figure among many Americans.
